Fencing
The right fence depends on what it needs to do: privacy, pool safety, keeping pets in, marking a property line, or looking good from the street. We build custom wood and PVC fences and the gates that go with them.
- Wood fencing: warm and customizable, but it needs staining or sealing on a schedule.
- PVC fencing: low maintenance and does not rot or need paint, with a more uniform look.
- Gates: walk gates and wider driveway gates, with hardware chosen for the load and how often it opens.
- Repairs: replacing leaning posts, rotted rails and damaged panels, or matching an existing fence.
Fence height limits are usually lower in front yards than in back and side yards, and rules differ by city. Fences on a shared property line also raise questions about who pays and who decides. We cover both before building.
Decks
A deck is a structure, not furniture. It carries people, furniture and sometimes a hot tub, so the footings, framing, connections and railings all matter. An attached deck's connection to the house is one of the most important details, and a common point of failure when done poorly.
- Footings sized for the soil and load, not guessed.
- Framing and connections built to code, with proper hardware.
- Guardrails where the deck is elevated, built to meet code on height and spacing.
- Decking material matched to your climate, budget and maintenance tolerance.
- Stairs with consistent rise and run, since uneven steps cause falls.
Attached decks and decks that sit well above the ground generally need a permit, and city rules vary. We confirm requirements for your address and handle the plan details that go with it.
Finish carpentry
Details such as post caps, trim, built-in benches, pergola elements and custom gate frames are what make an outdoor structure look finished. Our finish carpentry covers these pieces so a fence or deck looks designed rather than assembled from parts.
Wood, PVC or composite: how to choose
| Material | Look | Upkeep | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Traditional, warm, easy to customize | Stain or seal on a regular schedule | Moisture and sun are the main enemies; post bases matter |
| PVC | Clean, uniform, fewer style options | Mostly washing | No painting or rot; style and color choices are narrower |
| Composite (decks) | Wood-like boards in set colors | Low; occasional cleaning | Framing underneath is still structural and needs proper build |
Planning your fence or deck project
- Mark the property line honestly. If you are unsure, a survey is cheaper than moving a fence.
- Check HOA or neighborhood design rules before choosing a style.
- Think about slopes. Steps and level changes affect post layout and cost.
- Decide how you want to handle maintenance, because it should drive material choice.
